For the past few years, D’Banj’s music has been very hit or miss – more miss than hit if we are being totally honest. Even the last banger he scored, "El Chapo", benefited from the strength of his featured acts and a huge helping of nostalgia.
Now, after disappointing his fans with a row of middling singles, a few forgettable features and a studio album that barely made a dent in anyone’s mind, D’Banj has finally come through with a genuinely solid solo release: "Agidi".
Excellently produced by Chopstix, the immensely catchy, afrobeat-soaked "Agidi" is D’Banj’s first song in a really long time that actually makes him seem worthy of the "Entertainer" moniker he earned really early on in his career.
On "Agidi" (which means "strong head" in Yoruba), D’Banj sings about struggling to win the affection of a woman who doesn’t seem the least bit impressed by him. With his ego clearly bruised, he repeatedly asks on the chorus, “Why you still dey form agidi?”.
Since we all know that even a broken clock is right twice a day, we guessed that a solid D’Banj song was somewhere on the horizon. Well, now that we've finally gotten it, all we hope is that we don’t have to wait too long to get another one quite as enjoyable.
