Manchester City begin their title defence with a comfortable win over Arsenal
– Pep Guardiola’s side scored in each half of the match at the Emirates
– Sterling and Bernardo Silva got a goal each to claim maximum points
Premier League champions Manchester City began their 2018/19 campaign with a 2-0 victory over Arsenal at the Emirates in a Super Sunday match.
The Gunners were dominated in the opening exchanges of the match as City settled quickly into the game.
The first real chance fell to Raheem Sterling as he weaved into the Arsenal defence before playing his shot against Petre Cech who covered his lines brilliantly.
However, in the 14th minute, a moment of brilliance from Sterling produced the first goal of the match as he dribbled past three defenders before unleashing a shot that went straight into the back of the net to make it 1-0.
Aymeric Laporte should have made it two as Cech saved a free-kick from Riyad Mahrez which fell into the path of the Spanish defender but the Czech Republic goalkeeper made another save in quick succession.
The Citizens controlled the first 45 minutes as Unai Emery’s side failed to get a grip of possession in the half.
Arsenal came back strongly as substitute Alexandre Lacazette took a first-time volley as the ball flew past Ederson in goal but went just wide.
Arsenal kept a respectable scorline at 1-0 after Sergio Aguero failed to score on a one-on-one situation as Cech got a hand to the Argentine’s shot in the 63rd minute.
But a minute later, Bernardo Silva lashed on to a cross from Benjamin Mendy on the left with a clinical finish to make it 2-0 to City.
The goal unsettled the London club as they struggled to get back into the match. A couple of faulty passes and off-side calls destabilize new look Arsenal side.
However, Pep Guardiola’s men were calm and passed the ball around to keep the game in their stride as they held on to claim a 2-0 victory.
Arsenal will have another litmus test to their campaign as the take on their London neighbours Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
Meanwhile, NAIJ.com had earlier reported that Liverpool recorded a commanding 4-0 victory over West Ham at Anfield in their first Premier League fixture of the season.
As expected, the Reds were full of attacking in the first half and it did not take long before their star man Mohamed Salah got on the scoresheet.
