Few weeks after facing attack from Nigerians, England fans slam Turkish referee after semifinal defeat to Croatia
– Referee Cuneyt Cakir was accused of ‘disgraceful’ and ’embarrassing’ display during England’s 1-2 defeat by Croatia in extra time
– Cakir was also accused of not awarding a penalty during the last Group D fixture between Nigeria and Argentina
– The English fans accused the Turkish for giving free-kicks every time a Croatia player goes down
Fans of England’s Three Lions have condemned Turkish centre referee Cuneyt Cakir moments after Wednesday’s 1-2 defeat by Croatia’s Blazers in their World Cup semi-final showdown.
Most of the supporters took to social media platforms to urge world’s football governing body, FIFA to carry out a probe to what they termed a “disgrace to sport” after claiming his officiating on the night was “biased” and “embarrassing“.
Cakir was also accused of not awarding a penalty after the last Group D fixture between Nigeria’s Super Eagles and Argentina’s Albiceleste.
However, the English fans mostly accused Turkish for giving free-kicks “every time a Croatia player goes down” but failed to punish the East Europeans when they commit similar fouls.
One of the fans tweeted: “Can we sub the ref? I mean honestly he’s an embarrassment for a World Cup semi-final. Hopeless.“
The Turkish was also accused for allowing Ivan Perisic ‘controversial’ equaliser, with some football pundits insisting his foot was high before he netted Croatia’s goal.
Interestingly, Red Devils’ supporters, in particular, were furious after recalling how Portuguese star Nani was sent off for a high boot during a 2013 Champions League fixture against Real Madrid’s Alvaro Arbeloa.
However, Juventus forward Mario Mandzukic put the game beyond the reach of the Three Lions after scoring Croatia’s extra-time winner to end England’s dream of a second World Cup final appearance.
Another female fan tweeted: “Surely @FifaWorldCup should be investigating Cuneyt Cakir after this performance. Completely biased throughout. A disgrace to the sport.”
And critic said: “‘Cuneyt Cakir’ is Turkish for ‘Mike Dean’. As in ‘I’m going to to Cuneyt Cakir this game and make it all about me.”
Another supporter suggested that the ref was biased in favour of England’s Three Lions.
“Apparently penalty kicks when players are pushed inside the area are only for England. Terrible refereeing. Cuneyt Cakir biased towards the ‘richest’, as he always is in the Champions League. Shameful,” Hr posted.
Meanwhile, NAIJ.com previously had reported that Cuneyt Cakir who officiated Super Eagles match against Argentina has come under fire from raging Nigerian fans on social media.
The Turkish referee denied Nigeria a penalty when Marcos Rojo headed the ball onto his own hand and the VAR was consulted.
The replay clearly showed that the Manchester United defender handled the ball but the Cakir went to make confirmations and still did not give the spot kick.
