Despite being an unused substitute in his side’s 1-0 defeat to Uruguay in their World Cup group opener on Friday Egypt star Mohamed Salah was still the toast of every player.

The 25-year-old forward is yet to return to full fitness after his disappointing shoulder injury in Liverpool’s 3-1 defeat to Real Madrid in last month’s Champions League final in Kiev.

Jose Gimenez scored the only goal that separated the two sides in the late minutes of the encounter.

And after the referee sounded the final whistle, Edinson Cavani ran towards Salah to have his shirt, and the Uruguyan says he collected the jersey for his children.

The Reds striker scored a total of 44 goals in all competitions last term – a feat that has made him most sought after across top European clubs.

Egypt head coach Hector Cuper opted not to risk his star man for his country’s opener but that did not stop Cavani searching out the deadly finisher afterwards.

He said: “I took Salah’s shirt as a gift for my children, who also see him as a star.

The Egyptian was reported fit enough to play even though he was rested for the entire group a opener against the south American side according to the Egyptian Football Association.

The 25-year-old might be making his World Cup debut when his side file out against Saudi Russia in their second group game tomorrow, while Uruguay take on Group A whipping boys Saudi Arabia on Wednesday.

And worrying for the Saudis, who lost 5-0 to the hosts in their first match, Cavani is predicting improvements from his side after only just limping over the line against Egypt.

The Paris Saint-Germain striker added: “A draw would have left a bitter taste because Uruguay deserved to win,”

“We created a lot of chances, maybe without playing so well, but the Egypt goalkeeper [had a great game] and in a moment we all fell into the feeling that the ball did not want to enter [the net].

“We won and that is what matters. We are happy although we know that we have things to improve. Now we have to rest and think on Wednesday.

NAIJ.com previously reported that Egypt coach Hector Cuper revealed that star striker Mohamed Salah has recovered from his shoulder injury and will almost certainly play in their World Cup opener against Uruguay on Friday.
