Osun election: INEC is truly independent, Buhari is praise-worthy – Presidency
– Many Nigerians have reacted to the INEC’s declaration of the Osun governorship election as inconclusive
– While some are alleging that the election was a scam, others believe that the commission deserves commendation for a peaceful and fair conduct of the exercise
– Similarly, the presidency has said that President Muhammadu Buhari deserves appreciation irrespective of the outcome of the polls
The presidency, following the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC)’s declaration of the Osun governorship election as inconclusive, has said that President Muhammadu Buhari deserves commendation, Vanguard reports.
In a press statement, the commission’s chief returning officer in the state, Joseph Adeola Fuwape, revealed that the election was declared inconclusive because of the slim margin by which the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Ademola Adeleke, topped the All Progressives Congress (APC)’s candidate.
However, INEC has rescheduled Thursday, September 27, for the governorship re-run, a decision which many Nigerians, especially on social media, have decried. Yet, some other observers have praised INEC for a peaceful and successful conduct of the polls.
In this vein, the personal assistant to President Buhari, on new media, Bashir Ahmad, stated: “Whatever the outcome of Osun gubernatorial election, President Muhammadu Buhari deserves more accolades, in Nigeria, we have now relatively free and fair elections. No interference, no intimidation — from Anambra, Edo, Ondo, Ekiti to now Osun — the will of the people’s respected.”
Added to this, Lauretta Onochie, the social media aide to the president, remarked that INEC truly showed itself as independent. Onochie said: “One more evidence that INEC under Pres @MBuhari, is truly independent.”
Meanwhile, NAIJ.com reported that the INEC had declared the result of the Osun gubernatorial election inconclusive.
The returning officer of the election, Adeola Fuwape, in an address on Sunday, September 23, said based on the outcome of the result which ended with a slim margin between the two leading parties, the PDP and the APC, the election was inconclusive.
