– The Arewa Youth Consultative Forum (AYCF) warns law enforcement agencies against partisanship in the Ekiti governorship election
– The AYCF expresses sadness over the alleged recent clash between security agents and supporters of the PDP
– The group also says any attempt to muzzle the opposition in the election will have consequences on the forthcoming general elections
The Arewa Youth Consultative Forum (AYCF), on Friday, July 13, warned law enforcement agents against trying become partisan during the governorship election that is scheduled to hold in Ekiti on Saturday, July 14.
In a statement issued by the president of the organization, Shettima Yerima, the group expressed sadness at the way Governor Ayodele Fayose was reportedly manhandled by the police during a rally of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and their supporters recently.
“We have been following with keen interest the brazen abuse of democratic ethics and principles in Ekiti state, through the use force against Governor Ayodele Fayose,” the statement made available to NAIJ.com, said.
“It is a smear on decorum and an international embarrassment for a serving governor elected by millions of the poor people on Ekiti to be subjected to physical attack. We condemn this Gestapo style in totality.
“We are disappointed that at this stage of our national democratic history, there are persons in uniform ready to intimidate people, including the chief security officer of a state in broad daylight, just to please their paymasters.
“This is an uncivilized conduct, an attack on the rule of law and therefore reprehensible,” the AYCF added.
The group said it is not comfortable with the alleged use of “primitive means of impunity and open manipulation of a simple electoral process.”
AYCF warned that any attempt to muzzle the opposition in this election has far-reaching implications on the 2019 elections.
“We also wish to announce that as monitors of the nation’s democratic development we are watching, very closely, all the happenings, ahead of the Saturday (July 14) governorship election in Ekiti state and will support any effort to ensure that the people’s votes count.
“Finally we call on all stakeholders in the forthcoming Ekiti elections to ensure that the millions of voters in the state enjoy the freedom to vote for the candidates of their choice, without any form of intimidation,” AYCF said.
NAIJ.com earlier reported that some residents of Ado-Ekiti revealed their preferred candidates in the forthcoming gubernatorial election in Ekiti state.
Speaking in Ado Ekiti on Friday, July 13, one of the resident declared his support for the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Professor Olusola Eleka.
The resident who did not disclose his name argued that the government of Governor Fayose has done well for the people of the state.
