Martial, Lacazette out, Giroud In As France Name World Cup squad

May 17, 2018

Anthony Martial and Alexandre Lacazette were among the headline names forced to settle for a standby role in a France World Cup squad that includes Chelsea duo Olivier Giroud and N’Golo Kante.

Didier Deschamps was able to pick from an embarrassment of riches, particularly in attacking areas, as he plots France’s bid to win back the trophy they won for the first and only time in 1998.

Though injury robbed him of the likes of Dimitri Payet, who suffered a muscle injury in Marseille’s Europa League final defeat to Atletico Madrid, and Laurent Koscielny, Deschamps’ side will still be among the favourites for the World Cup when they kick off against Australia in Kazan on June 16.

Indeed the quality of his squad is apparent in a standby list that includes Manchester United and Arsenal forwards Martial and Lacazette, as well as Bayern Munich winger Kingsley Coman and London representatives Mamadou Sakho (Crystal Palace), Moussa Sissoko (Tottenham) and Kurt Zouma (Chelsea).

France’s 23 for Russia includes Giroud, who left Arsenal for Chelsea in January after being warned his World Cup place was in doubt if he remained on the Gunners’ bench. The 31-year-old has impressed since his move across the capital, scoring five goals including winners against Liverpool and Chelsea.

Tottenham’s Hugo Lloris will once more captain Les Bleus.
