According to him, the beneficiaries were carefully selected from 56 applicants that applied for medical support.
“The selected applicants need urgent medical attention, which should not be delayed. Last year, the sum of Thirty-four million, sixty-seven thousand, three hundred naira (N34,067,300) was allocated for medical support out of N148,069,905 zakat distributed. “The number of applicants for charity as at the end of April stood at 647. They are requesting for over N300 million. Fifty-six applicants with serious health-related issues requested for over Seventy-eight million naira (N78 million). Their cases range from cancer of the anus, spinal cord injuries, surgeries of various kinds, kidney transplants to hearing aids etc. We are attending to just 38 patients for now because we do not have enough funds to cater for all the applicants. As soon as we have more funds, other applicants shall be attended to provided they meet requirements of our screening exercise that ensures only deserving applicants received our charity.
“Our foundation is walking the talk as we ensure proper distribution of zakat collected every year since we commenced zakat collection and distribution years back. Permit me to call on all Muslims whose wealth is equal or above the Nisab to join us in reviving the most neglected pillar of our religion by paying their zakat to Zakat and Sadaqat Foundation. Sincerely, payment of zakat protects and increases one’s wealth. Moreover, Allah will be pleased with the payer for removing the burden of poverty from the poor and indigent in the society”, he said.
