Kofo Bucknor

Mention of the name of the Lagos State deputy governor evokes images of her running battle with her governor, Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu. But there is more to the urbane 62 year old Senator Louisa Kofoworola Bucknor-Akerele. A distinguished member of the aristocratic families of Bucknor and Akerele and senator in the Third Republic, her entry into politics and the eventual nine-vote victory that took her to the upper legislative house remain very dramatic even as she was the Senate Committee Chairman on Information and Culture.

A chieftain of the opposition NADECO of the military era, Bucknor-Akerele is also of the Afenifere hierarchy. She was in 1993 conferred with the chieftaincy title of 'Moroye of Lagos' by Oba Adeyinka Oyekan II as part of her contributions to Lagos state. Variously described as Iron Lady and Margaret Thatcher of Lagos. She is the only female deputy governor in the present political dispensation.
