Saraki survives impeachment

Saraki survives impeachment

  • As SSS withdraws from National Assembly
  • PDP Senators on red alert

The Senate President, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki, may have survived the impeachment plot triggered in the early hours of Tuesday with the deployment of masked operatives of the State Security Service (SSS) who mounted blockade at the entrance gate to the National Assembly complex. The SSS operatives had prevented Peoples Democratic Senators, including staff of the Assembly and Journalists from entering the National Assembly complex. All moments were restricted to the gate.

All Progressives Congress (APC) senators were gathered to be shuttling between Sheraton Hotels, Abuja, and the residence of APC National Chairman., Adams Oshiomhole, holding meetings on the day’s activities.

However, the intervention of Acting President Yemi Osinbajo in the immediate intermediation of the appointment of the SSS DG foiled the seeming democratic coup. The security operatives vacated their siege on the National Assembly and departed after the sack of their DG, Lawal Daura.

The masked operatives of the SSS had blockaded the entrance to the National Assembly at about 7.30am  but vacated their siege at 2:49 p.m. Tuesday afternoon.

They were gathered to have told senators and journalists that they were acting on orders from above.

However, Senator Dino Melaye was said to have vowed that PDP senators will continue their vigilance until their APC colleagues back down on the plan to impeach the Senate president.

Melaye had remarked that the sack of Lawal Daura, SSS DG,  was an attempt to salvage the failed integrity of President Muhammadu Buhari’s government.
