Cameroon Has Been Given Hosting Rights For The 2021 AFCON

A few days ago, Cameroon was stripped of the rights to host the 2019 AFCON, due to slow progress in preparation and security concerns.

While CAF has asked South Africa to step in as emergency hosts for next year’s tournament, it seems Cameroon’s efforts so far won’t go to waste, because they’ve been given the hosting rights for the 2021 edition of the tournament.

Initially, Ivory Coast was supposed to host the 2021 AFCON, but Daily Nation reports that CAF’s analysis of what’s on the ground shows they won’t be ready by then. What this means is that Ivory Coast’s turn will be moved to 2023.

Speaking about the decision, CAF president, Ahmad Ahmad said:

"We have seen that Cote d’Ivoire will not be ready to host AFCON in 2021. So, the Executive committee has confirmed Cameroon as hosts of 2021.

We have taken the decision for the good of African football on the basis of rules and regulations of the game in force."

So, while South Africa will most likely be saving our collective asses in football come 2019, we expect Cameroon to deliver nothing short of a stellar showpiece in 2021.
