Bolanle Austen-Peters Is Turning The Story Of Another Yoruba Legend Into A Musical

From Saro the Musical to Fela and the Kalakuta Queens, Bolanle Austen-Peters Production (BAP Production) has given us a number of highly-regarded musicals that theatre lovers flock to over the Christmas break.

This Christmas, BAP Production are back with another musical rendering of an indigenous legend: Queen Moremi the Musical

In 12th century Nigeria, when tribal rivalry was rife, the people of Ile Ife were being enslaved by an Igbo enemy. Queen Moremi, wife of Ife's king at the time, promised to give anything she had to the Spirit of the river Esimirin in order to gain the strength to save her people.

Soon after, she was captured as a slave, but her beauty enticed the Igbo ruler, who took her as his wife. Once she had gotten to know the ins and outs of the enemy army, she escaped and shared their secrets to her people of Ile-Ife, arming them with enough to drive out the Igbos once and for all.

The story of Queen Moremi is one of pain, patriotism, piety and sacrifice, as she was forced to give up her freedom and a loved one in order to save her people. If any production company can be trusted to bring this tale to life, it is definitely BAP Production, and we are excited.
