How Akwasi Frimpong Plans To Groom Ghana's Next Generation Of Skeleton Athletes

The 2018 Winter Olympics is a wrap. Although none of Africa’s barrier-breaking athletes won a medal, they certainly stole hearts across the world. Now, this is the kind of representation Africa needs and Ghanaian, Akwasi Frimpong knows this.

Fresh from making history in Pyeongchang as Ghana’s first ever skeleton athlete at the games, Frimpong isn’t resting on his oars. Having achieved his dream of becoming an Olympian, the 32-year-old now wants to channel his energy into grooming the next generation of skeleton athletes in his country.

In fact, he went to Pyeongchang with the goal of helping “people in [his] country to come out of their comfort zone and to dare to dream.”

Speaking with Africa News, he said:

“My goal is to come to Ghana and seek support from the Ghana Olympic Committee, sport authorities and the Ghana sports ministry to work together and come up with a 4-year plan so in 2022 we have more than one athlete.”

The 23rd Winter #Olympics have come to an end! I met my goals; Barriers were broken, history was made, & experience was gained. Thank you all

In trying to get more than one Ghanaian to feature at Beijing 2022, Frimpong will be working with the Bobsled and Skeleton Foundation Ghana which he founded two years ago. Of course, discovery is preceded by practice, therefore he plans to organize bobsled and skeleton clinics for young people every three months using wooden sleds.

With his experience so far, Frimpong is positive Ghana’s next generation of Winter Olympians will be saved the challenges he had to face while working to realize his Olympic dreams.
