Nigeria's music scene has seen a lot of female rappers whose careers came and went very quickly. We had the likes of Sasha P, Weird MC, Munachi Abii, who served us the odd hit here and there, and then faded into oblivion.
This isn't surprising, given that rap/hip hop is a testosterone-filled space, and you know how men get when women try and challenge the 'status quo'. Haddy Rappia, a female Hausa rapper is one of these women challenging the status quo, and is hoping to become as big as Nicki Minaj some day.
She is certainly an anomaly in the rap game because she is one of the only female rappers from the very conservative North. Women in the male-dominated music industry are usually hypersexualised (See Nicki Minaj, Lil' Kim and Cardi B), and it's very interesting to see Haddy Rappia aiming to storm the industry fully covered up!
Her musical ability might need some (a lot) of work if she wants to be as big as Nicki Minaj, but her courage and self-assurance are endearing to watch, and it's also great that she is holding on to her tradition and culture whilst pursuing a career that would be considered outrageous.
