Last year, we reported that Castle Lager launched Africa 5s — the continent’s biggest five-a-side tournament, featuring teams from six Southern African countries. The tournament is making a comeback this year, and we’re excited that Nigeria will be competing.
Kick Off reports that the beer brand included Nigeria and two other West African countries – Uganda and Ghana – to expand its growing market and further football growth in Africa. In the words of Castle Lager’s brand director, Vaughan Croeser:
“We are excited about the inclusion of Ghana, Nigeria and Uganda as that will expand our footprint across the African continent and cement Castle Lager’s role of creating and sustaining friendships beyond borders.”
Each participating country will hold competitions at the national level and the champions will go on to play in the continental tournament, which will take place in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. Samuel Eto’o will host the winners to an all-expenses-paid trip to a Ligue 1 match in Milan.
No doubt, Nigeria has recently been pulling its weight in other, less orthodox variations of football. So, it goes without saying that Africa 5s will be another platform for the country to gain more experience in five-a-side football. We can’t wait to see the team dominate.
