Born on 9 October 1988 in Sapele, Delta, in Nigeria, Blessing Okagbare is a Nigerian track and field athlete who holds Olympic and World Championships medals in the long jump, and 2 gold medals in both the 100m and 200m races at the 2014 Commonwealth Games.
As a teenager, Okagbare played football at her high school. And only in 2004, she began to take an interest in track and field. She began to win medals in the long jump, triple jump and high jump events at the Nigerian school championships. At the 2004 Nigeria National Sports Festival, Okagbare won three bronze medals. In 2006, the athlete for the first time performed in an international championship, the World Junior Championships in Athletics.
At the 2007 All-Africa Games, Blessing Okagbare she established a Nigerian record of 14.13 metres in the triple jump and won the silver medal in the long jump. At the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, she won a bronze medal in the women's long jump event. After she set a new African record of 10.79 s and won in her 100 m race at the London Anniversary Games, Okagbare won the silver medal in the long jump at the 2013 World Championships in Moscow.
At the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, she won a gold medal with a time of 10.85, breaking the games record of 10.91 seconds set by Debbie Ferguson-McKenzie. Okagbare also won the gold medal in the 200, with a time of 22.25 seconds. In November 2014, the fastest woman in Africa and Igho Otegheri, a professional football player and soccer administrator, married in Okagbare's hometown, Sapele in Delta State.
