OCTOBER 1ST

By Okechukwu Onuegbu

Why puzzle over her statuesque?

Gun boot diplomacy forced her

To marry thousand men

She was born on a platter of gold

When her nationalists fought for governance

Participation via their chains of newsprint

History says the agenda of their pre and post Conferences

Was participation in governance

Therefore, budgeting millions each year

To brainwash her children that all is well

Is like pouring water on the fire

It is either we bury her or comfort her

We can’t lose our senses to the gifts of deceits

We inherited from our nationalists

Men and women of valour

Who, selfishly intermarried just to rule

I read how hundreds of them

Throw tantrums on colonial masters

Through their chains of print media

But carapace as crabs when crowned

Immediately, the Union Jack was lowered

And replaced with Taiwo’s flag

Although the military government

Plastered our faces with pains

The time is ripe for us to redesign our skin

Time is ripe for us to redefine our future

We must not continue blaming ourselves

Democratic dispensation stands a better chance

To correct our past history.
