Another name she is known by is Mama Bakassi, due to the active role she played to bringing succour to her Bakassi people during the troubles of Nigeria and cameroun over the ownership of the Bakassi pennisula. Today, Florence Ita Giwa, a former wife of the late founding editor of Newswatch magazine, Dele Giwa, Ita-Giwa is a senator of the federal Republic. She has proven to be one lady with a resilient spirit despite losing a husband she has not been deterred.

Born in 1946. She attended the kilburn polytechnic London UK. She was elected member of the federal House of Representatives 1992-93. She is one of the three female senators of the federal Republic of Nigeria representing Cross River South constituency 1999. The other two who are equally wome of enormous influence are KHAIRAT GWADABE who represents Abuja and Senator STELLA OMU (wife of Gen. Paul Omu and a retired comptroller of Prisons)who is the hief Whip of the Senate. She is also a member of the committee on devolution of power constituent assembly 1994-95.
