Nasarawa United Beat FC Ifeanyi Ubah 2-0 in Tense Encounter

Two disputed goals on Sunday gave hosts Nasarawa United Football Club a 2-0 victory over visiting FC IfeanyiUbah of Nnewi in a 2016/2017 Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) fixture.

The Match Day 13 fixture, in spite of attracting a huge crowd to the Lafia Township Stadium venue, was without cordiality as players of both teams clashed throughout the encounter.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the match’s first real goal scoring chance fell to Nasarawa United in the 23rd minute, but Adamu Hassan’s effort was ruled offside.

Seven minutes later, Nasarawa United were awarded a penalty kick after Zenke Thomas was fouled by two FC Ifeanyi Ubah defenders at the edge of the penalty area.

More controversy followed as Hassan failed to score the kick and he was allowed a retake because FC Ifeanyi Ubah’s goalkeeper Bamba Drissa was adjudged to have unduly left his goalline

Protests by FC Ifeanyi Ubah players failed to move referee Abubakar Zubairu, and Hassan made no mistake this time around for Nasarawa United to take a 1-0 lead.

NAN reports that aside the penalty kick controversy, multiple confrontations in the second half occured between Godwin Obaje of FC Ifeanyi Ubah and Olayinka Onaolapo of Nasarawa United.

Obaje came out of that with a yellow card, after stamping his boot on Olayinka’s face violently.

Eugene Obi of Nasarawa United was also engaged in different violent confrontations with FC Ifeanyi Ubah’s Alberico Da Silva, forcing the encounter to be delayed several times.

In spite of the numerous infractions and delays, Nasarawa United sealed the win in the 82nd minute through another controversial circumstance, to the displeasure of the away team’s handlers.

NAN reports that Adeleye Olamilekun of FC Ifeanyi Ubah was infringed upon while attempting a header.

But play was allowed to continue for a close range shot for the second goal by Aminu Kadir.

Speaking to newsmen after the match, Obi praised his team mates for their doggedness and physicality.

He then assured his team’s fans that he would continue to do his best to ensure that his team also picked points from away games.

“I am grateful to God and my team mates for working very hard for this achievement. We prepared for the win because our position in the league is bad.

“We need to get away points to get to the top. So, we will continue to work hard,” Obi said.
