Education: The state had 1,488 primary schools with a total student enrolment of 500,046, as of 1999. Out of this student population, 177,096 are females and 322,954 males. There is one model primary school in each of the twentyseven Local Government Areas. The one at Guri is a boardina primary school. Another five boardina Dri mary schools in each of the five emirates were due to take off in the 1999/2000 academic year.

The state also has seventyseven postprimary institu tions with total enrolment of 27,754 out of which 7,268 are girls. The schools are made up of nine girls' secondary schools of which two are girls' science schools. There are also two science boys' secondary schools, one technical school and two vocational schools in the state.

There are eight tertiary institutions in the state; The College of Education, Gumel, was inherited from the former Kano State. In addition, the state polytechnic has since taken off with four colleges. Others include three more post secondary schools.
