Margret Ekpo

No doubt a rare breed and about the only still surviving gender activist from the pre-independence days. Margret Ekpo is a frontline politician and woman activist. She had her active days with the late Nnamdi Azikiwe (Zik of Africa) in the defunct NCNC. In her days she won the Aba north constituency for NCNC defeating male opponents through her ability to mobilise people. She is one lady who has continually advocated an increase participatory role for women in the present democratic dispensation. Born on July 27, 1914, in Creek Town, Calabar. Magaret spent her childhood days in this riverine area, schooling. In 1946 she left for the United Kingdom to pursue career in home economy.

In 1948-66 in Aba she was nominated a member of the house of Chiefs eastern region. In 1954 she was among the select member delegation for constitutional conferences in London and Lagos 1953,1957, 1959. She was a Member of Parliament Aba Urban north house of assembly eastern region 1960-66. She was the Nigerian women representative of the world women's international domestic federation conference Moscow USSR 1963. She has bagged some national honours to her name her hobbies include, photography sports football reading
